PRACTICAL TRAILER GUIDE

GVWR versus payload: what can a trailer actually carry?

Understand the difference before selecting axles or towing equipment.

01 / BUYING DECISION

GVWR is the loaded limit

Gross vehicle weight rating describes the maximum rated weight of the completed trailer and everything on it. Axle ratings alone do not replace the trailer’s final rating.

02 / BUYING DECISION

Payload is the remaining capacity

Subtract the trailer’s actual empty weight and installed equipment from its GVWR to understand available load capacity. Added storage, frame or accessories use some of that allowance.

03 / BUYING DECISION

Check the whole combination

Tow vehicle ratings, hitch ratings, tongue or pin weight, tires, brakes, securement and local rules also matter. Provide an honest loaded-weight estimate for quoting.

The numbers to request on a finished unit

Available payload is the finished trailer GVWR minus its actual empty weight. The rating of individual axles alone is not a payload figure.
